Guild Wars 2 has announced the first beta test for its new World vs. World (WvW) borderlands map, scheduled to begin on November 10. This new map marks the first addition to WvW borderlands in over a decade. The development team is adopting a community-focused approach, involving players much earlier in the design process than with previous maps.

During this initial beta phase, the map will be in a "gray-box" state, meaning its art and assets are not finalized. This allows the developers greater flexibility to incorporate player feedback regarding the map's layout and objective placement. The goal is to ensure that player input can directly influence fundamental aspects like travel time and combat flow before the visual design is locked in.

Beta Focus and Future Plans

For this first beta, the focus will be solely on the map and objective layout, without introducing new map mechanics. This is a deliberate choice by the development team, aiming to gather clear feedback on navigation, battle locations, and movement speed across the map. New mechanics are planned for later beta tests, once the core layout is refined.

To maximize playtesting on the new map, all existing Alpine Borderlands will be temporarily replaced with the gray-box map during the beta period. The long-term plan is for this new map to permanently replace the current Green Alpine Borderlands, ensuring each borderland offers a unique theme. The new map will be Ascalon-themed, drawing inspiration from both pre-Searing and post-Searing eras, and incorporating elements related to humans and charr.

Community Involvement

The development team emphasizes that this is just the first of multiple beta tests. Subsequent betas will incorporate changes based on player feedback from earlier tests and may introduce new map and objective mechanics. Players are encouraged to actively participate and provide detailed feedback on the official forums once a dedicated thread is opened closer to the beta launch. This collaborative approach aims to shape the new borderlands map with direct input from the WvW community.
