Dune: Awakening is preparing for its next major update with the announcement of the free Blood and Ice expansion, scheduled to launch on December 1 across all platforms. This expansion will introduce players to the Polar Sink, a new survival map located in the frozen northern regions of Arrakis, shifting the focus from heat management to surviving extreme cold. The developers also outlined upcoming features including new in-game events, a cosmetics store, and community-requested additions like offline single-player, character transfers, and full cross-play.
Navigating the Polar Sink
The Blood and Ice expansion will challenge players to adapt their survival strategies to a new environment where staying warm is paramount. Existing desert survival technology will not suffice, requiring players to upgrade equipment, gather new resources, and develop different tactics. The Polar Sink features two distinct biomes: the tundra and the heavily guarded ice cap. The tundra hosts strongholds of wealthy water shipper families, while the ice cap represents their most prized territory, offering valuable resources like ice for base cooling and production speed-up.
The expansion is designed to bring a renewed focus on ground-level survival, with traversal, temperature management, and combat playing key roles. It introduces approximately 35 hours of new progression content, alongside new vehicle modules, augments, and specialization traits. Players will need resources exclusive to the Polar Sink to craft new survival gear. The developers anticipate future updates will add more reasons to revisit the region for resource gathering.
Additional Updates and Features
Alongside the expansion, Dune: Awakening will introduce a new cosmetics store offering optional cosmetic items such as outfits, vehicle variants, and base customizations. These purchases are intended to support continued free updates for the game. The store will initially feature a rotating selection, including items inspired by the Dune films, with plans to make the full catalog available permanently over time.
The game will also expand its in-game events, introducing new stories, gameplay, locations, and free rewards. Upcoming events include "The Scourge," focusing on a spreading disease, and "Water Crisis," which will involve fighting for scarce water supplies. A dedicated Events tab will be added to the main menu to help players track progress and available rewards. These events will be playable in both single-player and multiplayer modes.
Looking ahead, the developers are working on several highly requested community features. Offline single-player mode is expected in November 2026, allowing play without an internet connection. Character copying, enabling transfers between multiplayer servers and single-player, or from single-player to select private/self-hosted servers, is planned for January 2027. Full cross-play, allowing players across all supported platforms to play together, is also slated for January 2027.
